(the) Welsh valleys
the Welsh valleys [the Welsh valleys] (also infml the valleys)
the industrial region of south Wales, for example the ↑Rhondda Valley. The main industries there were coal and steel, and coal mines were first established there in the early 19th century. For many years these industries employed most of the men in the region but the coal industry has now disappeared and the steel industry has become much smaller.
